General Info
The Briar Village Swim Team is a competitive swim team, dedicated to following the basic tenets of sanctioned, competitive swimming. We emphasize good sportsmanship, team spirit, learning the strokes and competitive swimming skills, and having fun.
ELIGIBILITY- Any resident of Briar Village who is 4 – 18 years of age by June 1 is eligible. Residents of other subdivisions may also participate on a space-available basis as league rules limit out-of-bounds swimmers to 25% of the team roster. USA swimmers may participate in the Bayou Swim League. The Briar Flyers welcomes new members of all ages and competitive levels—please email the team. All team members must be able to swim across the pool without assistance in order to compete in meets.
VOLUNTEERING- Briar Flyers Swim Team is run by volunteers! To participate, all swimmers must provide a parent or adult volunteer (16+) for their meets. Each swim meet lasts about 4 hours and generally, there are 2 shifts. See Description of Volunteer positions. There are many types of roles available, and we can find something that will work for you. Teens 14+ may fulfill their own volunteer requirements, although parent volunteers are appreciated.
SPONSORSHIP/FUNDRAISING- Sponsorships are a significant contribution to the team and help to keep swimmers' fees low and provide assistance to those in financial hardship. Sponsors are listed on t-shirts. All parents are encouraged to solicit sponsors from businesses and to consider a family-level sponsorship. Any family that gets a NEW sponsorship of $500 or more will be reimbursed for all enrollment fees. Coaches and teen volunteers are eligible for commission on new sponsors (see coordinator for details). See Sponsorship Form for details.
SWIM SUITS- Team colors are navy blue and gold. Team suits are highly encouraged. Swimmers may wear plain navy or black racing suits as a substitute. Suits can be ordered on May 18th when The Texas Swim Shop comes to our practice for swimsuit fittings or at their store.
AT MEETS AND PRACTICES- Parents please do not talk to the coaches during practice. You may talk to them before/after practice only. Swimmers need to respect the coaches and obey rules at practice and at meets. Consequences include sitting out a portion of or entire practice, and calls to parents. The baby pool is off-limits during practice and meets. Swimmers are only permitted in the pool during their practice time and need to get out promptly. Swimmers need to sit with their age group at meets so they can be located easily for their events. Wear sunscreen (put on after receiving event assignments at meets), and bring water and snacks as needed. Leave area clean and orderly.
NOTICE OF MISSING MEETS OR PRACTICE- At the beginning of the season, please communicate on registration forms and volunteer forms any planned absences. Please promptly respond to any meet invites sent, as we make a schedule several days ahead of the meet regarding which swimmers will swim in each event. In case of a sudden illness before a meet, please contact a coach or a team rep. Do not leave a meet without checking with a coach to confirm swimmer does not have additional races (check if swimming up). If arriving late to meets without prior notice, swimmers risk being replaced for relays. Arrive 1 hour before meet start/15-30 minutes before warm up to check in. If missing practice the week before a meet without prior notice, swimmers risk not being entered in relays or individual events for the meet.
